bigelm: Hampton Sucks-Administration checking myspace for illegal content

I am outraged at Hampton High School right now because they are checking everyones mysapce and have called people into the office. It seemed like this all started Friday, the day I skipped school because I was dead tired.

Anyway about the outrage...for one week I am going to post all kinds of false crap on my myspace about doing drugs, having sex, and drinking excessively at http://www.myspace.com/elmer4 and see if I get dragged into the office too. I've never done any of the above though. I like my myspace and I want to find out if I'm being watched. This is not a communist country, therefore I would like to keep it somewhat sane. I will fight back with my lies and this is a big deal for Hampton High School. F-c- the administration and all their games, because this is the biggest news Hampton High has had in a while. Let all this information spread to everyone in Hampton. PLEASE spread it to save us all. They just can't call everyone with a myspace into the office.

And they could be watching livejournal too. I dont know how, but fight for your freedom.

This is one of many posts going around the myspace community and I felt this one explains it best:

"not sure if anybody has heard about this, but there is something going around the school that kids are getting called in because of stuff in their myspace. well what the school is doing is illegal! as citizens of the United States, we are protected under the 1st Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America! It states:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or porhibiting the free exercise therof; or ABRIDGING THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH, OR OF THE PRESS, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Hampton High School has no right to deny it's students something that was given to them by the Founders of this country! The Founders believed that the freedom to express personal opinions is essential to a free government. They knew that the freedom to write and publish must be strongly protected. It is also no where to be found in the student handbook that things that are said on myspace are under the control of the school, and it can force you to change or delete if it feels that something is inappropriate!

FIVE REASONS THAT FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS SO IMPORTANT!!!!!

1.) promotes individual growth in human dignity
2.) important for the advancement of knowledge
3.) is a necessary part of our representative government
4.) is vital to bringing about peaceful social change
5.) essential for the protection of individual rights

DON'T ALLOW THEM TO TAKE AWAY YOUR VOICE! YOU ARE PROTECTED MY YOUR CONSTITUTION (and the student handbook that has no mention of this at all)!!!!! IF YOU ARE CALLED IN, QUESTION THEM ON HOW IT IS LEGAL! KEEP ON FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Hampton officially sucks.

This was just posted in a myspace, and this whole mess is spreading like wildfire. I thought I had to let you know:

"So for anyone who has not heard our wonderful school (hampton) is searching out myspace looking for whatever they can to bitch at us about so far they have called people's parents about them drinking and smoking and guess what even about someone being Bi-sexual. I dont really know how they can get away wit this but they are somehow of course the police are involved and people are having their lockers searched and parents called so in my opinion this is ridiculous. also in my opinion you should not change your page because the school tells you too.... Fuck them its not their job to tell you how to live your life, so dont give in to this shit because thats what they want from you if they call you down and you think there is a major problem which there really is just call the ACLU(american civil liberties union) here is the number 215-592-1513 i have it on speed dial i recommend you do the same but once again dont take their crap if they give it to you i would be glad to help if they are trying to screw you just let me know well bye bye for now

Here's yet another more informative post I've read about the incident:

"so i heard that officer miller reads your myspace and calls your parents....yea that's pretty f-cking lame when an officer of the law has nothing better to do with his life. it's none of his god da-n business what you post on here becuase THIS ISN'T SCHOOL RELATED."

Another lovely comment and I can find many more with a quick search on myspace too:

"So yes Our wonderful Hampton high school admin. are searching our myspaces to what bad things us students are doing. Yes i was very very surprised by this i know hampton was bad but not this bad. its none of their da-n business as to what we do in our free time like its right to call someones parents and tell them that their child is gay or bi-sexual or whatever. Hampton has finally gone over board, they are so surprised that kids in the school drink and smoke o dear god. so i dont know about any of you but i'm slightly p-ssed off about this I'm waiting for them to call me down and b-tch at me for saying i dont like school when i have already been accused of being in a gang for having a bandana in my pocket, being violent because i wear chains, and being a terrorist because i wear an anti-flag shirt and dont like the president... so yeah i hate hampton i really hope they get p-ssed about this i would love to have them yell at me so i can laugh in their faces have a nice day everyone

Just so you know, the nation does not determine the laws of schools; the education system rules are determined by each individual state.

So, yes. Your school is allowed to check each students' myspace if they feel the need. It's not even breaking the freedom of speech. It's checking the myspace of the students' to see if they're breaking the school rules.

Some jobs are checking out myspace/facebook etc. now, too. Are you going to tell your future boss that it's wrong to check out your myspace for them to have a better idea of you?

It's a reality check, not breaking anything in the constitution.

Hey I'm graduating from the school today, so this whole situation that happened 6 months ago is fine with me now.
